At the beginning of 2022, we received a very special invitation. Designer Renata Buzzo invited us once again to collaborate — our fifth collab — this time for her new collection, which was presented at São Paulo Fashion Week – SPFW No. 53, on June 2nd. We were even more honored and excited when she revealed the name and theme of the collection: Latina. As lovers of South America and its cultures, we were thrilled, but we also knew this would be a great challenge. Austral’s core mission is to present collections inspired by elements of the continent. Speaking of the feminine and Latin universe took us deep into our references — and we admit, at first, we experienced a bit of creative block!
In her new fashion film, the designer reflects on the pandemic period she lived through. She turned to her roots and ancestry to explore what unites us as women — the reasons why Latina women are stereotyped, how we are seen, the imposed dependencies, and our ethnic diversity. Her references stemmed from her relationships with the women in her family, as well as from Mexican telenovelas — widely watched in Brazil — where the female aesthetic is marked by bold elements like red nails and lipstick, raw sensuality, braids, and golden hoop-shaped accessories. The artist Frida Kahlo appears in Buzzo's clothing, a clear reference to the works that portray the life and pain of the Mexican icon.

In our remote exchanges, we discussed which accessories Renata would like to accompany her outfits. She requested the development of hoop earrings and a choker. We began researching her references but also revisited our own archive of lived memories from this continental land. For us, creating new jewelry with a minimalist aesthetic is always a challenge. We enjoy stepping out of our comfort zone, and we knew a simple hoop wouldn’t be enough. We wanted to add a bit of South American spice, especially from Andean culture.
After a period of experimentation and creative block in February, the designer sent us a photo of Frida with a sort of ruff framing her face. That sparked a wave of memories and fresh inspiration. From Christian religious elements — which strongly influence Latin cultures — such as ex-votos and the diverse iconography of the Holy Spirit, to the quipu, used by the Incas for communication and accounting. We finally arrived at the creations that once again brought us together — pieces that, despite their simple shapes, carry deep meaning. The designs also evoke the sun, so present both physically and symbolically on Latin flags. In this way, we connected our last collaboration with the designer — Trajeto Esférico, from 2019 — and our Constellations collection, to the pieces featured in Buzzo’s latest work.
The fashion film was broadcast live on SPFW’s platforms on June 2nd. Like the public, we saw Renata’s new work for the first time. It was beautiful — incredibly sensitive and masterfully stitched together with her inspirations. Even though we created just two jewelry models, we were surprised by how they appeared on screen — how well they integrated with the designer’s work and how they shone from different angles. It was a moving moment, especially since it marked our debut at SPFW. As the 27-minute film progressed, ideas kept bubbling up. At that moment — 2 p.m. on that Thursday afternoon — we decided that our Austral collection for Renata Buzzo – LATINA – had not only been born there, but would also grow into new designs. The other sketches and experiments we made during the development process of those two pieces will now complete this new collection. Soon, they’ll be launched here on our website.
